APIIT Shines at the Inter-University Enterprise Mobility Softyware Development Competition 2011

The Inter-University Enterprise Mobility Software Development Competition organized by Motorola Sri Lanka, in collaboration with SLASSCOM is considered a watershed for nurturing young entrepreneurs from amongst the best and brightest in Sri Lankan universities. Two teams represented APIIT for the 2011 challenge. Team 'Agri Techno' focused on a software solution for the plantation industry and team RMS [Restaurant Management Solution] came up with a software solution for the food and beverages industry.

The event was held at the University of Colombo on the 6th of October 2011. Forty nine teams across Sri Lanka submitted initial entries and 16 teams were short listed for the final round. The team from the University of Peradeniya emerged victors with their mobile solution for Agricultural and Livestock management, after intense competition.

Team 'Agri Techno' comprising C.M. Tharanga Nuwan Chandrasekara , R.M.Isuru Uthpala Bandara Ranasinghe, Dushmantha Ranathunga, Samith Disal Sandanayak, P.G.G.T.C.Deshapriya, W.P.C.T Pulasthi and Chamath Silva from APIIT emerged as the runners up at the event bringing much esteem to APIIT by being the only team from a private higher education institution to secure a winning position.

In recognition of these students' hard work and talent, an award ceremony was held at the APIIT City Campus on 8th of November 2011, where the two teams demonstrated their projects.

Team Agro Techno came up with an innovative solution which supports many of the processes in the plantation industry such as demarcating the land extent for cultivation, scheduling of fertilizing, forecasting weather, managing virus attacks, checking auction and competitor prices, observing labor distribution in the estate on a given day and tracking the history of weather and disease conditions of the area. This application can be installed on a mobile device which would enable the planters to track activity in their plantations while on the move. The main feature of this solution is the ability to identify and monitor issues that would threaten the health of the plantation combined with the ability to deliver vital information at the right time and on location. Therefore this may be an ideal solution for the Sri Lankan plantation industry which is facing severe competition from countries such as Kenya, India etc...

Team RMS produced a solution which supports the entire business process in a restaurant from order placement to delivery and payment. The main functions of this solution are order management, inventory management and delivery management. The solution leverages a magnetic stripe reader found on the mobile device to facilitate credit card payments, and Google Maps to facilitate delivery of orders.

Team RMS comprised of Melaka Atalugamage, Paul Sean Perumal, Shenal Pussegoda, Dhammini Fernando and Malith Isuru Dilanka.

The certificates in recognition of the students' achievements were awarded by Mr. Anuradha Tennakoon, the Director and Country Manager, Motorola Solutions. The importance of leveraging the emerging trend towards mobile solutions was discussed and the students were encouraged to market their solutions.
